England travel album

3.10.16

Summer is officially over, fall is already in full swing, I started a new job a month ago and things finally seem to fall into place. Which also means: some free time and a free mind to continue sharing and writing here.

Welcome back! I hope you've had a great summer.

I definitely made the most of the short summer we usually have here in Hamburg. While most of my summer adventures will be documented in my regular project life album, I picked out a week I spent in England with my family and made a mini album about that holiday which I'm going to share with you today.

On the format

At first, I wanted to use a Midori traveler's notebook insert to document my trip, but soon realised it wouldn't fit because I took way too many pictures plus I intended to include quite a few papers and other stuff I found along the way. I kept the format though and decided to bind the mini album myself with some rings. The good thing about the traveler's notebook format is that I can use regular A4 papers (and photo paper!) and cut them in three pieces without any "lost" ends. This made the whole process really easy and the album rather quick to assemble.

Choosing papers

For the papers, I chose mostly neutral colours such as white and kraft cardstock, plain vellum, watercolour papers (with simple blue patterns and backgrounds) and a paper pad from Sostrene Grene. In terms of embellishments, I kept the album rather simple with some pieces of the Pink Paislee Outfitters collection.

Making the album aesthetic work for me

During summer, I kind of took a break from scrapbooking because I just wasn't excited anymore. I was bored by page protectors and by the more or less same look of the albums and things I created. I figured I would be a good idea to intentionally choose one design related aspect to focus on during a project. For this one, I went with alphas and really made an effort to reduce my stock of different alpha stickers.

The album actually turned out so thick that I have to keep the pages together with several regular rings. Still have to find two huge rings to hold it all together...

How to include large memorabilia in a mini album

While in England, I found a booklet with hand drawn maps of the region and I knew right away that I wanted to include them into my album. However, with the format being about 10x21 cm, I had to figure something out. In the end, I adhered the maps onto A4 sized kraft paper and folded the paper several times to make it fit. I really like how it turned out and how it adds a little interest to the album.

Stamping onto watercolours is so good!

In Lyme Regis, I went to a shop called Seasalt and they not only make the perfect Breton/Sailor striped shirts but also the cutest tags.

And that's it! One week of road tripping in England is in the books. Thanks for taking a look and for making it through the many pictures...

    1. Thank you Mandy for your kind words! I feel that after posting my albums for a couple of month I discover what seems to be typically "me". It's so weird, but good.
